UPDATE: I finally got Einstein back to Firmware 1.1.1, and fully unlocked with Installer, etc. After hours of reading long, strange and arcane methods and trying most of them to no avail, I have one single site to thank for my success: http://i.unlock.no. Seriously, if you have iPhone unlocking needs, http://i.unlock.no has got your fix! Read through their docs to pinpoint your problem and patiently work the steps. I promise you: These are the most effective and simplest of all unlocking tools I've found thus far. Give 'em a shout!

New Year's here, and for me that always includes playing with my new Christmas toys. This year, it's been my iPhone and my soon to arrive XO laptop. Both are leaders in 'new' technologies, and both have their quirks. Take the good, ya take the bad...

In lieu of messing with my XO right now (right, it hasn't gotten here yet...), I'm trying for the Nth time to get my iPhone updated to a newer firmware version, while still keeping it unlocked for my long-running T-Mobile account. As I type here in the half dark, with Mr. Colbert rambling behind me on the telly, in front of me is good old AnySIM, crawling across the bottom of Einstein's screen, telling me once more about how hard it's trying to reflash my baseband (whatever the flock that is...). Its optimism gives me hope...

And Lookie There! Einstein lights up, She's says it took, and after a brief restart, I see a glorious 3 out of 4 bars on my cell-signal icon!!! Calling the cabin... ring, ring! She Lives! Ironically, the only thing that seems to be missing is the T-Mobile label which used to fill the space of the AT&T next to the signal icon. I can certainly live with invisibility though, and one thing is for certain: I Will Sleep Really Well Tonight ;-)

iPhoniac

As we round into December (my favorite birth-month of the year!), I'm here on a rainy day in the cabin with my almost-one-month-old iPhone. Her name is Einstein (because she's genius...), and she's shamefully unlocked for use on T-Mobile USA. I probably shouldn't just announce such things, but I see two factors working in my favor here:

1) Who really ever reads this crap o' mine anyway? Seriously. If I were to get 'busted' by Apple, AT&T, or even T-Mobile, then i can only imagine the increase in page hits to good ol' krisbates.com... Tough luck, indeed.

2) To my understanding, it is not illegal to own an unlocked phone of any flavor. In fact, we can thank recent changes in the Digital Millenium Copyright Act for that good news.

Anyhoo, one month into the iPhone, and I refuse to repeat what you've all heard from the outside world thus far. It's as good as you've heard and it is a paradigm shift. 'nuff said... My preference is to talk about what is coming, rather than simply the here and now. Keep reading if you're still with me...
